Byron Price, the Associated Press Washington bureau chief, coined the phrase in 1932 and, decades later, Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill adopted it and made it a defining theme that is just as relevant today as it ever was. However, all political advertising is not local. And I have had the privilege of creating campaign concepts and copy for both local and national politicians.

Like every other copywriter and art director I know, I love pro bono assignments. You almost always have more creative freedom with a pro bono client than you do with any paying client. You never have to haggle over budget. And you get the satisfaction of helping out with a worthy cause. It’s a win, win, win.
